Project mates from Hell

What kind of project mates do you like to work with? Remember how excited we all were when teachers told us, we had to hand in projects? Yay! Isn’t that exciting? We can go to each other’s house, do our projects, play a bit and then do our projects and play a bit more. Most of the time we were having fun playing our friend’s latest games and building our little models of volcanoes or farmhouses. At that time we love our project mates! =)

Then we grow up and continue doing projects because in the real working world, we would be doing projects. Projects, projects, projects all our life and so a variety of project mates we come across. We no longer love our project mates like we do in the past. Here are some types of project mates you would want to avoid or you can end up draining your life away.

The Chatterbox
He will dominate most of the time during meetings and deprive of others the chance to contribute. When he is full of ideas and has tons of comments to say, others have no hope of saying anything or even dispute their ideas. All they can do is nod their heads and say, ‘ yeah… yeah…’ When he runs out of things to say, he will question your ideas and comments as if your contribution is worthless. Only his is superior and the best. Make way for the contributor of the year.

The Social Loafer
He is in the project because it is a requirement to be in one. But right from the beginning he doesn’t want to do anything. He may or may not turn up for meetings, depending if he has any other commitments. He is like a phantom member. When it is time to hand up the project, he makes a special guest appearance to autograph the coversheet. How shameless…

The Tell-Me-What-To-Do
He attends every meeting diligently and may even arrange for all the meetings. Everyone seems to understand what’s going on and when it comes to the real writing, ‘ Erh… what to do ar? How to write? I don’t know how to write?’ At this moment, it’s time to be reading mum or feeding nanny. You have to go through everything with him again individually and write a detail outline so that he knows exactly what to write.

The Non-Writers
He is so handicap in writing that when you receive his portion, you want to kick yourself for asking him to write in the first place. The essay made no sense and when you edit, you are better off writing it from stretch. Or he comes up with a reasonable piece of writing but you have to be like a detective to clean up the grammatical, punctuation and spelling mess left in the sea of words.

Lesson learnt: be selective of your project mates. Or you will end up with many sleepless nights doing the project alone and sharing the credit with everyone equally. Bravo…
