Musical Night

The musical is ok lah. But going by the Chinese language industries' standard, it is not bad, probably beginning of something better or greater?

The story line is pretty typical. Well, which musical is not? Those that are big hits are those with great music, set in a significant historical background or had many sub-plots weave in it to add depth and volume. I think if the characters are further developed; it will be a better musical.

I thought that the set was quite good, creating a magical and fairy-like atmosphere. However, the costumes and lighting lacks powerful visual effects. Besides this, the chandeliers had to make an appearance only at the end of the show for the grand finale? Why waste it by hiding behind the curtains?! I guess, only the meteor shower and the garden scene (which reminds me of Phantom of the Opera) saved the day. Otherwise, it was not much of a treat for the eyes.

It was a treat for the ears though. The singing was good especially Jacky Cheung. Some of the songs were really touching. I love the scenes when Jacky Cheung and Evonne Hsu sang duets. Of course not forgetting, Nandia Chan. She had quite a number of solos in the second half which was not bad. The others were average and forgettable.

The microphones were to close, besides picking up their voices when they sing, it also picked up the sound of their breathing and gust of breath they exhaled. The sound control was bad. The sound engineers were not able to control and balance the music and the vocals, causing the music to drown the singing. Sometimes the music got so loud that it was blaring loud. Some of the actors and actresses were also not clear in their articulation when they deliver their lines.

The musical didn't start on time. In fact, some 30 minutes late! The audience was still streaming in at 2015. Hey, you think attending some Chinese wedding dinner? Must come late, the later the better?

Another irritant were the staff manning the food and beverage stall and of the merchandise of the musical. We were seating at the balcony seats which towers over them. Being bored, I guess, they had to chit chat, arrange the tables, drag some heavy load etc... creating necessary noise for the musical. Gosh! What are they doing! There's a performance going on! Can't they respect the actors and actresses and lastly the audiences who came to support the performance?

Singaporeans is still a long way in appreciating art performances. Not being a stuck-up or turning my nose up. I just feel that we need to respect both performers and audience.
