Effects of our own doing?

First the cows. Then the fowls. Then the pigs. Now the fishes! Of all fishes, it must be eel!

There goes my unagi. It is banned. My favourite Japanese dish! It was reported yesterday that low levels of malachite green (what the heck is that?!) was found in samples of eel from China. This green substance is used by fish farmers to treat fungal infections and parasite problems in their stock. It can cause liver tunours/ cancer. It takes 5000, 100 g pieces of eels to cause any ill effects!!! Singapore imports 57% from China and the rest from other sources. Guess what. We import a whooping 882 tonnes of eel last year! Whoohoo! I must have consumed quite a number out of those 882 tonnes. Hee hee...

See the effects of our own doing. All the chemicals we pour into the environment which makes its way to the animals. I feel that it is a silent protest telling us to stop dumping all our rubbish indiscriminately, including the chemicals, to Mother Nature. What goes around, comes around.

But... but... what about my unagi?! I'm gonna miss my favourite Jap dish for awhile.

Hopefully it will not affect the eggs seriously enough that I can't have my chawanmushi, another of my favourite Japanese dish...
